Battery technology

NMC3 is a new generation of high-performance batteries for the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro. The new power packs are characterised by an enormously high capacity – for longer ranges without intermediate charging. Depot or high-power charging? With the new NMC3 batteries, both are made possible. Their particularly long service life are also a definite plus. Choose a sustainable energy supply with a long-term effect now!

Choose from a variety of battery configurations depending on your required usage profile. The eCitaro and the eCitaro K use a minimum of four and a maximum of six battery packs with a combined capacity of up to 588 kWh. The eCitaro G can accommodate a minimum of four and a maximum of seven battery packs with a combined capacity of up to 686 kWh. When the maximum number of battery packs are installed, the NMC3 batteries can guarantee a reliable range of 400 kilometres for the rigid bus and the eCitaro K and 300 kilometres for the articulated bus – over the battery's entire service life. In practice, this means that the Mercedes-Benz fully electric low-floor city bus can cover a large proportion of bus routes.*

The NMC3 battery's performance explosion compared to the previous version is impressive. With the improved high-energy cell chemistry, optimised battery pack and new battery carrier, energy density has been significantly increased. The eCitaro G's energy capacity has increased by more than 70 percent and the eCitaro's and eCitaro K's has gone up by around 50 percent – with the same weight at vehicle level. The optimised charging compatibility is also impressive: when charging at the depot socket, a charging capacity of up to 150 kW can be achieved. If even longer routes are planned, intermediate charging with a charging capacity of up to 300 kW is also an option using a pantograph or with charging rails. The NMC3 batteries are designed to last for around 4,000 charging cycles when charged conscientiously at the depot. This corresponds to a service life of eight years or more of daily use under ideal operating conditions.

NMC3 batteries – the benefits:

NMC3 batteries – the benefits:

  • long range for longer routes.
  • Modular capacity.
  • High charging capacity.
  • Long service life.
  • High-performance charging possible with a pantograph and charging rail.

NMC4 batteries are more robust, offering higher energy density and optimised performance, even when fast charging is used. Battery condition is continuously monitored to guarantee maximum safety. The batteries also have a uniform charging capacity of 300 kW when charging via pantograph and 150 kW when charging via CSS2 plug in the depot.

The eCitaro solo bus has a reliable range of up to 500 kilometres and the eCitaro G up to 400 kilometres when equipped with the maximum configuration of batteries and hydrogen tanks. *

* The range was determined internally under specific conditions, including equipment with maximum battery capacity, battery in delivery condition, in typical city bus operation and moderate weather scenario, and may deviate from the values determined in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2017/2400, for example. The actual range depends on the individual use of the vehicle, the vehicle configuration and other external factors. Therefore, the actual range may be below or above the specified value.
