Safety first

The new Mercedes-Benz Intouro.

Safety is the primary goal of Mercedes-Benz development. And it is just so with the new Intouro, as the driver of this all-rounder has to master the most varied traffic situations.

Safety starts with theft protection. The Intouro can optionally be fitted with the new Keyless Start system. On entering the Intouro, the driver can insert the key, unlock the ignition and start the motor by pressing a button. Keyless Start also functions as an immobiliser.

The Intouro can come with any currently available safety system. For the first time in an intercity bus, even Sideguard Assist with person recognition is available. It warns of moving objects on the door side during turning, such as pedestrians or cyclists, and also alerts the driver about stationary obstacles in the turning curve. In addition, it supports the driver when changing lanes to the right.

A top- range cockpit with new operating features and sensational assistance systems – the Intouro is at the top of the technological f ield.

The new electronic handbrake unites ease of handling and high safety. The electronic handbrake is automatically released when driving begins (accelerator pressed, vehicle put into gear). Conversely, the handbrake is automatically activated when the Intouro is at a standstill and the driver leaves the cockpit or switches off the engine – the bus is secured against rolling away.

Visibility means safety, as does the standard rain-light sensor. Whether it’s lights or windscreen wipers, the technology takes control. High-quality headlamps are a further safety characteristic of the new Intouro. The range of fittings runs from powerful halogen to xenon lamps with LED daytime running lights, optionally supplemented by fog lamps with cornering lights. With this all-round support, the Intouro is prepared in the best possible way for practically all traffic situations.

It’s looking out for you: In the new Intouro, Active Brake Assist 5 celebrates its world première. It is the first emergency braking assistant for buses or coaches that triggers full braking on detecting pedestrians.

Yet more safety, yet more support for bus drivers: the new generation of the Active Brake Assist 5 (ABA5) can now trigger full braking not only because of stationary impediments and vehicles in front, but also pedestrians – a unique ability in the world of buses and coaches.

This once again increases the performance capability of the Active Brake Assist. Mercedes-Benz introduced it in 2008 and has continuously developed it since then. The technical background of ABA 5 is the addition of a highly developed camera system to the multi-mode radar system, which remains in use. The data from the radar and camera systems are combined in a control device, allowing better detection of pedestrians and vehicles.

If there is a danger of collision with a mobile or stationary pedestrian, the Active Brake Assist 5 warns the driver optically and acoustically and simultaneously instigates either partial or full braking.
